Career Details
Before joining politics, he worked as a constitutional lawyer. From 2002 to 2010, he served as an attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund, now called Alliance Defending Freedom—a conservative legal organization that focuses on constitutional issues.
He started his political journey when he won a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2015, serving there until 2017. He was elected to represent Louisiana’s 4th District in Congress in 2016.
While in Congress, he challenged the 2020 presidential election results both in the House and through legal efforts. He led the Republican Study Committee, the biggest conservative group in Congress, from 2019 to 2021.
He then served as the vice chair of the House Republican Conference from 2021 to 2023.
After Kevin McCarthy was removed as speaker, Johnson was chosen to take his place on October 25, 2023. He later won a close vote to secure a full term as speaker in 2025.
