While attending Moon Area High School, he focused on music, studying voice, leading the choir as student conductor, and singing solos at school concerts. After graduating in 1961, he moved to New York City to work as a session singer.
In the early days of his music career, before joining the Army, Lou was backed by a girl group called The Tammys, from Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, on some of his early songs.
During the 1970s, he split his time between London and New York City, continuing to work on his music.
