She says the September 11 attacks inspired her to think about a career in public service and policy. She finished high school at the Albany Academy for Girls in 2002.

She then went to Harvard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2006. In 2004, she served as vice president of the Student Advisory Committee at Harvard’s Institute of Politics.

As of August 2023, she, along with Jake LaTurner and Rep. Henry Cuellar, is enrolled in the master’s program in defence and strategic studies at the Naval War College.

Career

After Harvard, she worked in the George W. Bush administration on the U.S. Domestic Policy Council and later in the office of White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten.

In 2009, she started the blog “American Maggie” to share the views of conservative and Republican women, named after Margaret Thatcher. She helped Rep. Paul Ryan get ready for the 2012 vice presidential debate.

After Romney and Ryan lost the 2012 election, she went back to upstate New York and worked in her parents’ business.

She opposed Trump’s first impeachment in 2019 during the Ukraine scandal and supported his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, including objecting to Pennsylvania’s votes.

In May 2021, she became chair of the House Republican Conference after Liz Cheney was removed for opposing Trump. She received the Dr Miriam and Sheldon Adelson Defender of Israel Award from the Zionist Organisation of America.

She has expressed support for Israel’s “biblical right” to the West Bank. On January 20, 2025, President Trump nominated Stefanik to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

But on March 27, 2025, her nomination was withdrawn due to worries about how leaving the House could affect the slim Republican majority.

She ran for governor of New York in 2026, announcing her campaign in November 2025, but retired from politics the following month.
