He was known for his strong endurance, playing over 300 minutes in multiple seasons.
In 2004, he earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and was named Offensive Lineman of the Week seven times, as well as Offensive Player of the Week against Northwestern.
After an impressive showing at the 2006 Senior Bowl, he was seen as the best center in the 2006 NFL Draft, ranking ahead of Greg Eslinger, the 2005 Outland and Rimington Trophy winner.
From 2007 to 2010, he played every game each season. On August 24, 2010, he signed a seven-year deal worth $55 million, with $22.5 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid center in the NFL at that time.
On February 25, 2017, the Jets released him after 11 seasons. He retired from football on April 17, 2018, after sitting out the 2017 season.
Later, on September 25, 2022, he was honored by being inducted into the New York Jets “Ring of Honor” during a halftime ceremony at MetLife Stadium.
