In 1967, her family moved to Denver, Colorado. She studied at St. Mary’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic school in Cherry Hills Village, and finished high school at 16 in 1971.
After that, she joined the University of Denver, where her father was working then. She first studied music and even attended the Aspen Music Festival and School after her second year.
Later, she took a class on international politics taught by Josef Korbel, which made her interested in the Soviet Union and world affairs.
In 1974, when she was 19, she became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society and earned her bachelor’s degree in political science with honors from the University of Denver.

She became the first African-American woman to serve as Secretary of State and the first woman to be National Security Advisor. When she was appointed Secretary of State, she was the highest-ranking woman ever in the U.S. presidential line of succession.
She had earlier worked at the State Department during the Carter administration and later served on the National Security Council as an advisor to President George H. W.
Bush, focusing on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe during the fall of the Soviet Union and Germany’s reunification from 1989 to 1991.
On December 17, 2000, she joined President George W. Bush’s team as the National Security Advisor.
A member of the Republican Party, she later served as the U.S. Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009 and had earlier held the role of National Security Advisor from 2001 to 2005.
In September 2010, she joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business as a professor and became the director of its Global Center for Business and the Economy.
