He joined Soros Fund Management in 1991 and later led its London office. He helped the firm earn $1 billion during the 1992 British Pound crisis and made another $1.2 billion in 2013 by betting against the Japanese yen.
After leaving Soros in 2015, he started his own hedge fund, Key Square Group. He worked as an economic advisor, fundraiser, and major donor for Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.
On November 22, 2024, Trump nominated him for U.S. Treasury Secretary. The Senate confirmed him on January 27, 2025, and he officially became the 79th Treasury Secretary on January 28, 2025.
He is the second openly gay man to serve in the U.S. Cabinet, after Pete Buttigieg. As Treasury Secretary, he is fifth in line for the presidency, making him the highest-ranking openly LGBT official in U.S. history.
In September 2025, he reportedly had a heated clash with Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte.
In October, he said he was working on deals for the private sector to provide Argentina with another $20 billion, with interest from banks and investment funds.
Later that month, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Russian energy companies Rosneft and Lukoil due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
