He served as a shadow delegate and senator for Washington, D.C., from 1991 to 1997. He is also the father of former U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. and current U.S. Representative Jonathan Jackson.
He started his activism in the 1960s and created groups that later joined to become the Rainbow/PUSH organization. He stayed active in civil rights and ran for president again in 1988, finishing second to Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis.
