In 1993, Esquire published Gilbert’s short story “Pilgrims”, calling it “The Debut of an American Writer.” She was the first new writer since Norman Mailer to have a debut story featured in the magazine.

She turned her 1998 GQ article “The Last American Man” into a biography about naturalist Eustace Conway. Her first book, Pilgrims (1997), a short story collection, won a Pushcart Prize and was also a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award.

She funded her travels for the book with a $200,000 advance from her publisher after presenting the idea in a proposal.

In 2007, she was invited to The Oprah Winfrey Show and later returned several times to talk more about the book, her views, and its movie adaptation.

Her fifth book, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage, came out in January 2010 through Viking Press. In 2012, she brought back At Home on the Range, a 1947 cookbook written by her great-grandmother Margaret Yardley Potter.

A year later, in 2013, she released her second novel, The Signature of All Things.
