Benz Hui Shiu-hung was born into a well-known and influential family in Canton. His great-grandfather was a godson of Empress Dowager Cixi and served as an imperial official during the late Qing dynasty.
His great-aunt, Xu Guangping, was married to the famous writer Lu Xun, while his granduncles Xu Chongzhi and Xu Chongqing were prominent figures one helped found the Whampoa Military Academy, and the other served as Canton’s education minister.
Growing up in such a respected family, Hui was surrounded by culture and education from an early age. His unique name “Benz” came from “Mercedes-Benz,” as he became known for being the first ATV actor to drive one to work.
