A well-known moment from his career came at the 1984 U.S. Open, when he jokingly waved a white towel from the fairway after Greg Norman sank a long putt to catch up with him on the final hole.
He played in the Ryder Cup in 1979, 1983, and 1985. He later joined the Champions Tour in 2002 and won the Senior PGA Championship that same year. He also picked up another victory at the 2004 MasterCard Championship.
