After finishing high school, he was rated as a three-star player and ranked 87th among cornerbacks. He first committed to South Alabama but later changed his decision and chose to play college football at Auburn University.

In 2018, he appeared in seven games as a freshman at Auburn. The next year, he played in all 13 games, making 36 tackles and one interception.

Instead of entering the 2021 NFL Draft, he decided to stay at Auburn for his senior season. That year, he recorded 49 tackles, two interceptions, and led the SEC with 14 pass breakups.

The Tennessee Titans picked McCreary in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, with the 35th overall selection. He was the fifth cornerback chosen that year.

In 2023, he became the team’s starting nickelback, playing 15 games and starting in 11 of them, finishing the season with 86 tackles.

In the 2024 season, he played in 15 games, making 50 tackles, one pass deflection, three quarterback pressures, and one sack.
