He went to Martha Manson Academy for elementary education and later studied at Oak Hall High School in Gainesville. After his father was appointed as the Lower School Principal at Darlington School, the family moved back to Rome.
He finished his schooling at Darlington, where he took part in several sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and track, representing the Darlington Tigers.
He studied at the University of Georgia in Athens. He joined the Georgia Bulldogs football team as a walk-on player and played in the safety position from 1991 to 1994.
During his college years, he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Order (Gamma chapter) and was also recognised for his academics by being named to the SEC Academic Honour Roll in 1993.
He completed his studies at the University of Georgia and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1994. In 1996, he completed a master’s degree in education at Auburn.

While in college, he joined the Kappa Alpha Order (Gamma chapter) and was named to the SEC Academic Honour Roll in 1993 for his studies. In his final year, he served as a defensive team captain and took part in two bowl games with the Bulldogs.
His teammate and quarterback, Mike Bobo, later described him as someone who worked extremely hard and played with great strength and intensity.
After finishing his studies at Georgia, he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Auburn University. He worked with defensive coordinators Wayne Hall and Bill Oliver during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
After that, he spent one season each coaching defensive backs at the University of West Georgia and Eastern Kentucky University. In 2000, he was promoted to defensive coordinator at Valdosta State University.
He joined Nick Saban’s team at LSU in 2001 as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2002. The following year, LSU won the BCS Championship.
On December 11, 2010, Florida’s athletic director Jeremy Foley announced that Muschamp would take over from Urban Meyer as the 23rd head coach of the Florida Gators football team.
On December 18, 2025, Texas announced that Muschamp would come back to the team as defensive coordinator, taking over from Pete Kwiatkowski.
