His real name is Timothy Michael Dolan. He was born on 6 February 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. His father worked as an aircraft engineer and was a floor supervisor at McDonnell Douglas.
The family later shifted to Ballwin, Missouri, where they were part of Holy Infant Parish. From a very young age, Dolan felt drawn to becoming a priest and often spoke about this calling.
As a child, he even acted out church services while playing. In 1964, he joined Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary in Shrewsbury, Missouri. He later completed a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at Cardinal Glennon College in Shrewsbury.
Cardinal John Carberry then asked him to live in Rome while continuing his studies at the Pontifical North American College. In 1976, he received a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Career Details
He was ordained as a priest on June 19, 1976, at Holy Infant Church for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. After becoming a priest, he served as an assistant pastor at Curé of Ars Parish in Shrewsbury and Immacolata Parish in Richmond Heights.
In 1979, he was sent to Washington, D.C., to pursue doctoral studies at the Catholic University of America, where he focused on the history of the Catholic Church in the United States.
His doctoral research was about Bishop Edwin O’Hara of Kansas City and was later published as a book. In 1994, he went back to Rome after being chosen as rector of the Pontifical North American College.
While there, he wrote the book Priests for the Third Millennium and also taught at the Pontifical Gregorian University and St. Thomas Aquinas. That same year, Pope John Paul II honored him with the title of monsignor.
On June 19, 2001, Pope John Paul II chose Dolan to serve as an auxiliary bishop in St. Louis. A year later, on June 25, 2002, the Pope appointed him as the tenth archbishop of Milwaukee.
He officially began this role during a ceremony held on August 28, 2002, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee. He led the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2010 to 2013.
He became a cardinal in 2012, appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. As a cardinal, he took part in the 2013 meeting that chose Pope Francis and later joined the 2025 conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV.
