His real name was Nuno Filipe Gomes Loureiro. He was born in 1977 in Viseu, Portugal. He was attacked at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on the night of 15 December 2025.
He was taken to a hospital in Boston but died early the next morning. Police started a murder investigation, and the case got a lot of public attention.

Career Details
After finishing his studies, Loureiro started working as a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University’s Plasma Physics Laboratory in 2005. In 2007, he moved to the UK to work at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy until 2009.
After that, he went back to Portugal and spent seven years as a researcher at the Plasma and Nuclear Fusion Institute at IST in Lisbon. In 2016, Loureiro began working at MIT as a professor and fusion researcher.
His work focused on how magnetic fields and plasma behave, using computer simulations, and he published many research papers.
In 2021, he was promoted to full professor of physics and also held a joint role in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering.
In 2022, he became the deputy director of MIT’s biggest lab, the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, and was promoted to full director in 2024.
In January 2025, President Biden gave him the Presidential Early Career Award, the top U.S. honor for young scientists.
