He finished high school at the San Francisco Institute and later enrolled in civil engineering at the National Autonomous University of Honduras.

However, he left his studies to work in the construction field instead. He began taking part in public and political life during the 1990s.

Career Details

From 1990 to 1994, he worked as an assistant in the city’s legal office and also helped Mayor Nora Gúnera de Melgar. Later, between 1994 and 1998, he was in charge of public services.

He also took part in the city administration under Mayor César Castellanos Madrid and later worked with Vilma Reyes from 1998 to 2002.

In February 2005, he ran in his party’s internal elections as a possible mayoral candidate but did not win. Ricardo Álvarez won instead and later became mayor, while he joined the city government as a council member.

In 2009, he was elected as a deputy for Francisco Morazán. After that, he was chosen to lead the Honduran Social Investment Fund, a role he held until September 2011.

He was selected by the National Party as its presidential candidate in 2021. The party chose him again to run in the 2025 presidential race.

His campaign also received public support from U.S. leader Donald Trump and Argentina’s leader Javier Milei.

In 2025, he took charge as the head of the National Party of Honduras. He is also running once more in the 2025 presidential race.

At the moment, he is leading with about 40.3% of the votes, but the outcome has not been confirmed yet.
