She served in the U.S. Navy for nine years, spending her last five years as a lieutenant. While studying law at Georgetown University in 2007, she worked as a summer associate at Kirkland & Ellis.
After earning her law degree, she joined the firm’s New York office and worked in the litigation department from 2008 to 2011.
In 2015, she started working as a federal prosecutor in New Jersey under U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman. She left the position in 2016.
On May 11, 2017, she announced her run for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district. In June 2018, she won the Democratic primary with 77% of the votes, defeating four other opponents.
In 2020, she faced a tough race but won against Republican tax lawyer Rosemary Becchi with 53.3% of the votes.
In 2024, she easily won the Democratic primary, getting 93.6% of the votes against Mark De Lotto.
On July 9, 2024, she became one of the seven House members who publicly asked President Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 election.
She announced her run for governor in November 2024. In the June 2025 primary, she won the Democratic nomination with 34% of the votes, defeating Newark’s mayor, Ras Baraka, and Jersey City’s mayor, Steven Fulop.
