His real name is Mark Edward Kelly. He was born on 21 February 1964 in the City of Orange, New Jersey, United States. He is 61 years old as of 2025. He finished high school at Mountain High School in 1982.
In 1986, he earned top honors with a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering and nautical science from the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
Later, in 1994, he completed a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. In December 1987, he became a naval pilot and trained on the A-6E Intruder attack plane.
He joined Attack Squadron 115 (VA-115) in Japan. After the Gulf War, he earned his master’s degree and attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School from 1993 to 1994.
As a pilot and test pilot, he has flown over 50 types of aircraft, spent more than 5,000 hours in the air, and completed over 375 carrier landings.

Career Details
In 1996, NASA picked Kelly and his identical twin, Scott, to become Space Shuttle pilots, and they joined the Astronaut Corps that August. They are the only siblings to have both gone to space.
On June 21, 2011, he announced he would retire from the Navy and NASA on October 1 to focus on supporting Gabby Giffords during her recovery from the attack earlier that year.
He co-founded and advised World View Enterprises, a Tucson company that explores near-space using high-altitude balloons. Between 2011 and 2016, he gave paid talks in the U.S. and China for Shaklee, a company selling nutritional supplements.
In 2013, he and Giffords started a nonprofit group called Americans for Responsible Solutions (later merged into Giffords) to promote gun control, including universal background checks.
On February 12, 2019, he announced he was running for Arizona’s U.S. Senate seat in the 2020 special election. He won the Democratic primary on August 4, 2020, and in 2022, he won a full term by defeating Republican Blake Masters.
When independent Kyrsten Sinema left the Senate in 2025, he became Arizona’s senior senator.
He was also considered one of the top three candidates for the Democratic vice presidential pick in 2024, alongside Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Kamala Harris, the presidential nominee, eventually chose Walz. On November 24, 2025, the U.S. Department of Defense said on social media that Kelly was being investigated following serious allegations of misconduct.
