Desmond Michael Bane is an American professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the TCU Horned Frogs. Bane was selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA draft with the 30th overall pick by the Boston Celtics, but was traded to the Grizzlies in November 2020 before the start of his rookie season. Bane was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in his first year in the NBA.
Desmond Bane, a strong three-point shooter and solid defender, has been traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Orlando Magic.
Known for his 41% career shooting from beyond the arc, Bane started his NBA journey with the Celtics in the 2020 draft but was quickly sent to Memphis, where he earned a spot on the All-Rookie Second Team. The Grizzlies, coming off a disappointing season that included Ja Morant’s struggles and an early playoff exit, decided it was time for changes.
The first big move came with Bane’s trade to Orlando, who gave up Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and draft picks in return. Although the Magic lost some bench strength, they filled a major gap. Last season, they ranked last in three-point shooting, and Bane’s arrival is expected to boost their starting lineup significantly.

Bane went to Seton Catholic High School, a small private school in Richmond. By the time he was a senior, he was one of the best players in the state, averaging 30 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.2 blocks per game. He even dropped a school-record 62 points in one game, including nine three-pointers, leading his team to victory over Lincoln Senior High School. He was named MVP of the Wettig Memorial Holiday Tournament and ended his high school career with 1,991 points, breaking a decades-old record in Wayne County.
Despite all his achievements, Bane didn’t get much attention from big college programs. He didn’t receive any NCAA Division I offers until his senior year. Furman was the first to offer him a spot, just before the early-signing deadline in November. Then on May 12, 2016, Desmond committed to play for TCU. At the time, he wasn’t ranked by top recruiting sites like 247Sports, ESPN, or Rivals, but he was determined to prove himself.
