He has said he was raised in a religious family and attended a small African Methodist Episcopal Church with them. He finished high school at Northern Valley Regional in Old Tappan, playing varsity football and making the 1986 USA Today All-USA high school football team.
He then earned a political science degree (BA) from Stanford University in 1991 and a sociology master’s (MA) in 1992. He received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at The Queen’s College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in U.S. history in 1994.
While at Oxford, he led the L’Chaim Society and became close friends with Shmuley Boteach.
He earned his law degree (JD) from Yale Law School in 1997, ran free legal clinics for low-income people in New Haven, and volunteered as a Big Brother. He was also active in the National Black Law Students Association.

Booker, a Democrat, is New Jersey’s first African-American U.S. senator. He was Newark’s 38th mayor from 2006 to 2013 and served on Newark’s Central Ward Municipal Council from 1998 to 2002.
In 1998, he won a surprising seat on Newark’s Municipal Council, gaining attention by doing a 10-day hunger strike and living in a tent to highlight city development issues.
He ran for mayor in 2002 but lost to Sharpe James, then won in 2006 by defeating Deputy Mayor Ronald Rice. He was reelected as Newark’s mayor in 2010.
He won a U.S. Senate seat in New Jersey in a 2013 special election and was reelected in 2014 and 2020. He became New Jersey’s senior senator when Bob Menendez stepped down on August 20, 2024.
He was the first senator to testify against another senator during Jeff Sessions’s 2017 attorney general confirmation. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 but ended his campaign on January 13, 2020.
From March 31 to April 1, 2025, he gave the longest speech ever in the U.S. Senate, speaking for 25 hours and 5 minutes to protest Donald Trump’s second term.
