She started practicing monologues in front of a mirror and decided to become an actress at 12. At 14, she joined Havana’s National Theatre of Cuba, sometimes hitchhiking to attend the tough course.

While studying, she acted in three films. She left the four-year program just before finishing because Cuban rules required graduates to complete three years of community service before leaving the country.

At 18, she got Spanish citizenship through her maternal grandparents and moved to Madrid to follow her acting career.

In Cuba, de Armas starred alongside Álex González in the romantic drama Una rosa de Francia (2006). At 18, she moved to Madrid, and just two weeks later, she met casting director Luis San Narciso, who had seen her in the film.
