His dad was mostly away in the U.S. Navy, so his mom raised him alone. She found comfort in boxing at the C.W. Boxing Club in North Omaha, where his grandfather, father, and uncle had trained.
His grandfather closely watched over him after school to keep him away from local crime. In 2001, he started training with Brian “Bomac” McIntyre and Esaú Diéguez, who became his long-time coaches.

He started boxing at seven and had 70 amateur fights, losing 12. He beat future champions like Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, and Diego Magdaleno three times.
After winning three tournaments before the 2008 Olympics, he became the top lightweight in the U.S., but losing to Sadam Ali ended his Olympic hopes. His amateur record was 58–12.
He turned professional on March 14, 2008, as a lightweight and knocked out Brian Cummings in the first round. In 2014, he went abroad to fight Ricky Burns and won his first world title, the WBO lightweight belt.
