He was born on 8 December 1981 in Decatur, Alabama, United States. In fifth grade, he made a poster about his dreams for a school project. He played his first official game in seventh grade in 1994.

After his father became a head coach, Rivers played high school football at Athens High School in Athens. During his senior year, he became the top high school quarterback in the state.

He got offers from Auburn and Alabama, but neither team expected him to start as quarterback. The first college to really recruit Rivers as a quarterback was North Carolina State.

After high school, he went to North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and joined coach Chuck Amato’s Wolfpack football team. He started college in January and took part in his first quarterback practice in spring 2000.

Career Details

He played college football at NC State and was picked fourth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, who then traded him to the San Diego Chargers.

He spent 16 seasons with the Chargers and played his last season with the Indianapolis Colts. He spent his first two NFL seasons as a backup, then became the Chargers’ starting quarterback from 2006 to 2019.

He made eight Pro Bowls and helped the team reach the playoffs six times, winning four division titles.

He helped the Chargers win their first playoff game since 1994 and reach the AFC Championship in 2007. In 2020, he made the playoffs again with the Colts, marking his seventh playoff appearance.

On January 20, 2021, he retired from the NFL after 17 seasons, saying it felt like the right time.

He confirmed he would become the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. Four years later, on July 21, 2025, he signed a one-day contract to officially retire as a Chargers player.
