He was picked in the 20th round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. After playing three years in the minor leagues, he joined their spring training in 1992.
He made his MLB debut on April 12 against the Orioles and got a double in his very first at-bat. On August 27, 1992, he was traded to the Mets in exchange for pitcher David Cone, as Toronto strengthened their pitching for a World Series push.
Even though he was traded, he still received a World Series ring. His career really started to shine after he joined San Francisco in 1997.
He was placed in the lineup right after Barry Bonds, and with the manager’s trust, he finally hit his stride — finishing the season with a .250 average, 29 homers, and 121 RBIs.
In 2002, he had another amazing season for a second baseman, with 37 home runs, 108 RBIs, a .313 batting average, and strong defence. On December 14, 2004, he signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After 2005, he extended his contract through 2008. When that season ended, he retired on January 22, 2009.
He was chosen for the Hall of Fame by the Contemporary Baseball Era committee during the 2026 voting, which was announced on December 7, 2025.
