Some of his well-known films include The Last Emperor (1987), Licence to Kill (1989), Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991), American Me (1992), Rising Sun (1993), and Mortal Kombat (1995).

According to the reports, he was married. His wife’s name was Sally Tagawa (m. 1984–2014). He had three children named Brynne Tagawa, Calen Tagawa, and Cana Tagawa. 

He was born to his Japanese parents. His mother’s name was Mrs Mariko Hata, and his father’s name was Mr Tagawa. He did not have any siblings.

He was born on 27 September 1950 in Tokyo, Japan. He was 75 years old as of 2025. In the early morning of December 4, 2025, he passed away at his home in Santa Barbara, California.

He died due to complications from a stroke, and his children were by his side when he passed. He grew up in different cities because his family was in the army.

Eventually, they settled in Southern California, where he started acting while at Duarte High School. He went on to study at the University of Southern California and also spent time in Japan as an exchange student.

While in Japan, he trained in kendo and Shotokan karate under Masatoshi Nakayama at the Japan Karate Association.

Career Details

He became widely known for playing the Eunuch Chang in The Last Emperor (1987). In 1989, he was an undercover agent in the James Bond movie Licence to Kill.

He also played the sorcerer Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat (1995) and later returned to this role in the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series (2013) and the Mortal Kombat 11 video game (2019).

He played Heihachi Mishima in the Tekken movie. In 2006, he voiced Brushogun in Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo. He also appeared in Johnny Tsunami (1999) and its sequel Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board (2007).

In 2015, he played Nobusuke Tagomi, the Trade Minister of the Pacific States, in Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle, based on Philip K. Dick’s novel.

Earlier, in 2013, he began collaborating with Russian actors Pyotr Mamonov and Ivan Okhlobystin.
