He was born on 14 February 1967 in Bogotá, Colombia. He is 58 years old as of 2025. When he was five years old, his family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he grew up.

His father worked as a surgical assistant, and his mother worked in real estate. He became a U.S. citizen when he turned 18. He studied at the University of Michigan and finished with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

After finishing college, he worked at General Motors. When he was 26, he moved to Massachusetts to run a Saturn car dealership for The Herb Chambers Companies.

In 2005, he shifted to Ohio and bought a Mercedes-Benz dealership near Cleveland. By 2016, he owned more than a dozen dealerships, mostly in Ohio.

In 2019, he started selling several of them so he could focus on his new blockchain tech company, Ownum. In 2018, he created the Sales Center for Excellence at Cleveland State University.

The next year, Cleveland Magazine named him to the Cleveland Business Hall of Fame. In April 2021, he announced he was running for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Rob Portman.

On February 3, 2022, he ended his campaign, reportedly after a meeting with Donald Trump. On April 10, 2023, he officially filed to run for the U.S. Senate in the 2024 race.

Donald Trump supported him in December 2023. He won the Republican primary on March 19, 2024, defeating Matt Dolan and Frank LaRose. He took office on January 3, 2025, as a junior U.S. senator in the 119th Congress.
